Avalokiteshvara’s Birthday

03/12/2020  08/08/2020 10/31/2020

Guanyin or Guan Yin is the most commonly used Chinese translation of the bodhisattva known as Avalokiteśvara. Guanyin is the Buddhist bodhisattva associated with compassion. In the East Asian world, Guanyin is the equivalent term for Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva. Guanyin also refers to the bodhisattva as adopted by other Eastern religions. The Chinese name Guanyin is short for Guanshiyin, which means “[The One Who] Perceives the Sounds of the World, indicating her compassionate ability to listen for pleas of help so she can come to the aid of the needy.

We celebrate the birthday of GuanYin three times a year. The first birthday falls on the 19th day of the 2nd Chinese lunar month. The second birthday falls on the 19th day of the 6th Chinese lunar month and the third birthday falls on the 19th day of the 9th Chinese lunar month. These dates denote GuanYin’s birthday, her/his initiation and the event of her attaining the state of Nirvana.

To celebrate the birthday of Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara (Guan Yin), which falls on March 12, August 08, and October 31 in 2020, respectively.  Mahayana Temple will hold the Great Compassion Repentance and Guanyin Bodhisattva’s birthday light offering service. Devotees who are interested may come and join us at Mahayana Temple city campus and retreat.
